First Grade

First grade builds on kindergarten foundations while promoting greater independence and confidence. Instruction follows state standards (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) and continues to support the whole child—academically, socially and emotionally.

Academic Learning

• Literacy: Developing reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing complete sentences and short compositions
• Math: Building fluency with addition and subtraction, understanding place value and solving real-world problems
• Science & Social Studies: Exploring scientific concepts, communities and the world through inquiry and observation

How Students Learn

• Hands-on, interactive lessons with a mix of whole group, small group, and independent activities
• Opportunities for collaboration, discussion, and problem-solving
• Continued use of exploration and meaningful learning experiences
• Structured routines that strengthen independence and responsibility

Whole-Child Development

• Social and emotional skills such as teamwork, communication and self-management
• Physical development through recess and active learning
• Building confidence, perseverance and a love of learning

Overall, the program maintains high expectations while providing developmentally appropriate instruction, helping students grow as independent learners and critical thinkers.
