Hello students,

Hi! I’m Mr. O’Brien, your Centennial Art teacher. Welcome to art class—one of the best places to imagine, explore, and create!

In art, we’ll experiment with different materials, learn about artists and big ideas, and discover that there’s more than one way to make great art. Whether you love to draw or you’re still figuring things out, this is a place where everyone is an artist.

I can’t wait to create with you!

Mr. O'Brien

Welcome to Art Class!

In Plano ISD, the art journey begins in elementary school! Students participate in art class for approximately 50–55 minutes each week, where creativity, curiosity, and confidence are encouraged every step of the way.

Our elementary art program follows a sequential, developmentally appropriate curriculum designed to help young artists grow their skills while discovering their unique creative voices. Lessons are built around the creative cycle, a process that mirrors how real artists think and work.

Students begin by exploring art and big ideas—looking closely at artwork, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing observations through discussion and artful thinking routines. From there, they plan and problem-solve, sketching ideas and experimenting with different materials and techniques. Next comes the fun part: creating their artwork, bringing ideas to life through hands-on exploration. Finally, students reflect and share, thinking about what they made, how they made it, and celebrating their learning with classmates and the school community.

Through this process, students don’t just make art—they learn to think creatively, take risks, and express themselves in meaningful ways. We can’t wait to see what our young artists imagine and create!
